Humanity is the greatest threat to carnivores.
It is up to us to decide how we will treat wild carnivores in upcoming years. It is up to us to decide how we will converse with one another, how we will research these animals, and how we will be able to provide for future generations to live amongst them.
POUNCE is run by Aspen Stevanovski, a carnivore biologist who focuses on carnivore-human mitigation. Currently, she runs a research project on American gray wolves, where she has created the largest data set on wolves in the lower 48 in order to analyze major predictors for cattle and sheep predation. She also studies eastern coyotes in the field and hopes to use her experiences to pursue her PhD in coyote-red wolf hybridization. She also has interest in African carnivores, especially cheetahs, African wild dogs, and spotted hyenas; she studied and researched in Tanzania for the summer of 2019.

MY RESEARCHI run two research projects. One focuses on statistical analysis of gray wolves and factors influencing livestock depredation. The other focuses on using camera trapping and scat to study behavior and ecology of suburban & urban eastern coyotes.

WHAT IS CARNIVORE-HUMAN MITIGATION? From poison to the "big bad wolf" myth to a seemingly universal hatred for hyenas, carnivores around the world have been persecuted since human development. Today, the conflict continues, especially as increased urbanization forces humans and carnivores closer together. Issues like livestock predation lead to deadly retaliations- mitigation helps find different solutions.

ABOUT MEI'm Aspen and I run POUNCE. I've always had a huge passion for animals, from aardvark to zebra. Although my personal research is on wolves, I'm currently in Tanzania in order to learn about global carnivore conservation and expand my knowledge on a global scale.

Wolves are one of America's most hated animals. But why?

My Strategy in conserving gray wolves, Coyotes, & red wolves:
First Let'sLearn
There are many myths regarding wild canines- it's time to debunk them. When debunking myths on gray wolves, I use science and facts, not emotion or family tradition. I aim to educate people of all backgrounds and opinions on the truth about carnivores.
|
Now let's CollaborateBalance
Whether you live amongst carnivores or have never seen them in your life, whether you're a wolf lover or a wolf hater, no solution can be reached without compromise. If we balance our different viewpoints, perhaps we can come to a solution. I don't believe the wolf debate is black and white. All sides have valid points. For example, a conservationist may not know the pain of a rancher's loss from wolf predation, but a rancher might not know the beneficial use of nonlethal deterrents against wolves.

IT'S UP TO USConserve
In a quickly urbanizing world, the future of global wildlife is questionable. Once we compromise, using science and collaboration as trailblazers instead of politics and misconceptions, perhaps we can conserve wolves and the other wildlife in their ecosystems.
